Helen Horine (1912- ) & Vernon Zimmerman (1906-1969)
ca. 1940 |
Helen Eva Horine Zimmerman was born in Hamburg, Ohio in April 1912. She attended school in West Alexandria, Ohio and Eaton, Ohio. On December 13, 1930, Helen married Vernon Zimmerman who was a conductor on the Pennsylvania Railroad line. There were no children, but they loved to fish, hunt mushrooms, and grow flowers and travel. Vernon was known as "Scooter" and was loved by all. He always had a story to tell. Scooter passed away in 1969 at 61 yrs. Helen became a cosmetologist and had her own beauty shop on N.W. 17th Street in Richmond, Indiana for many years. After Alva and Blanche died, Helen became the center of family news, activities, and plans for gatherings like picnics, fish fries, and card parties. Helen moved to Eaton to be near brothers and sisters after her retirement. In Eaton, she was an active volunteer for the Food Pantry and the Preble County Historical Society. Helen was a faithful caregiver for many friends and was always a steady candle of warmth and caring for her family. The oldest of twelve siblings, she fulfilled the "maternal" role with her brothers and sisters and their children too.
