Obituary of George Tobias Horine

George Tobias Horine, son of Jacob Horine and Elizabeth [Dutro] Horine, was born in the Middletown Valley, near Myersville, Frederick County, Maryland, February 15, 1830; died with neuralgia of the heart, at his home in West Manchester, Preble County, Ohio, January 2, 1895, aged 64 years, 10 months and 17 days. In September 1836 he moved with his parents from the place of his birth to Castine, Darke County, Ohio, and the next spring they purchased and moved upon the farm about two miles west of [New] Castine where he lived until about eight years ago, when he retired from farm life and moved to West Manchester, some five miles from the farm where he died. After moving to town he was for a few years a partner with two of his sons in the mercantile business, but several years before his death he withdrew entirely from business and lived a retired life.

On march 6, 1853, he was united in marriage with Eliza Stout. To them were given five sons, one of whom died in infancy [Franklin Elmore, 1/27/1859-2/26/1859]. The other four (Joseph Newton Horine, Jacob Wesley, William Clayton, & John Willas), together with his widow and four brothers, are left to mourn his departure. He was reared in the Luthern faith, but in January, 1849, he was converted at a meeting held in Castine, and joined the United Brethren Church, embracing fully its doctrines and reform principles, to which he remained true and faithful until his death.

In 1889 he was elected a trustee of the Publishing House, and re-elected in 1893, and was one of the most valuable members of the board. As a man, Mr. Horine was considerably above the average in intelligence, thoughtful, conscientious decided in his conviction and had the courage to stand by them. As a husband and father he was firm, true, and faithful, governing well his own household. As a christian he was consecrated consistent and full of faith. Hence, he was honored and revered by his family, highly esteemed by his neighbors, and greatly loved by his brethren in the church. He died in peace as only a good man can die.

Obituary of Eliza Stout Horine

Eliza Horine, nee Stout, was born near Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio, on January 29, 1839, and departed this life at her home in West Manchester, Ohio, May 15, 1903, at the age of 67 years, 3 months and 16 days. She removed with her sister [Mathilda Stout], Mrs. Peter Farst [Faust], from Pickaway County in 1850, locating near Castine, in Darke County, Ohio, on a farm adjoining the one on which she lived with the husband of her youth, until coming to West Manchester, to the home from which she so recently departed.

She was married on March 6, 1853, to George T[obias] Horine, who preceded her to the spirit world some eight years ago. To them were born 5 children, four of whom are living: Jacob W[esley], at Three Oaks, Michigan, Joseph N[ewton], near Castine, William C[layton], at Greenville, John W[illas], at Eaton, and Franklin E[lmore], who died in infancy.

She was converted and became a member of the United Brethren Church at Castine, Ohio, in the year 1854. Afterward removing nearer to the Otterbein United Brethren Church, she united with that church retaining her membership there until January 4, 1898, when, under the labors of Rev. S.T. Morris, she became a member of the Christian Church at West Manchester, Ohio.

The kind Christian spirit which characterized her life in its various relations as mother, wife, sister, neighbor, and friend, won for her a place in the affections of the many who mourn for her to-day.

She was a charter member of the Ladies' Aid Society of the West Manchester Christian Church. This society, which has been in existence for about six years, is now invaded for the first time by the messenger of death.

She leaves two brothers, two sisters, four sons, eight grandchildren, besides many more distant relatives and friends who mourn her departure.

Funeral services were held in the West Manchester Christian Church, conducted by the writer, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Otterbein Cemetery to await the resurrection morning.
