"The Monument Schoolhouse, Near Myersville, Burned"
"The Monument public school house, two miles west of Myersville, which was a good weather boarded building, was destroyed by fire between 11 and 12 o'clock on Thursday night of last week, together with about $50 worth of books belonging to the county. It is thought the fire originated from an overheated stove. The school was taught by Mr. Alvey J. Horine, of Myersville. Only four persons--Messrs. Edward J. Moser, Charles Myers, Jos. Ludy and Daniel Fottler---were attracted to the scene by the fire, and but for their efforts, possibly the barn of Mr. Wm. Ludy, which was nearby, might have ignited from the sparks. A lot of fencing belonging to Mr. Noah Myers was also burned."
Elizabeth D. Flook, wife of Alvey J. Horine, was the daughter of Dawson F. Flook and Elizabeth Harp. She was born on the family farm in Myersville which was the which was the first farm on the right past her adult residence of 513 Main St., Myersville.
This house was built by her maternal grandfather, John Harp. She was a music teacher and very active in church life at the United Brethren Church in Myersville. She was helpful in rebuilding church after walls blown down in 1890 storm. She left her piano with the church.
According to "The History of Frederick County", the Flook family is descended from five brothers of French Huguenot origin. These five brothers sailed from Bristol, and landed at Philadelphia about 1760. Three of these brothers settled in Maryland and two in Pennsylvania. One of the former, Henry Flook, later moved to Virginia, where he died in 1840, nearly 100 years of age.
Another of these brothers, who had first settled in Lancaster County, Pa., went to Oneida, and located near Smith Falls, in the Province of Ontario, Canada. From here his descendants moved to Iowa and Indiana. There were, at the beginning of the 20th Century, over 1000 descendants of these brothers in Canada, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, and Nebraska."
Subsequent information seems to refute the above legend of the "5 Huguenot brothers". The ancestor of Elizabeth Flook Horine, and the Maryland ancestor of the Flook family was Jacob Fluck, who first appeared in Maryland in the mid-1750's. The Henry Flook who went to Virginia was Jacob's son and was born in Frederick County in 1756.
