Carl Edgar Besecker

Carl Edgar Besecker, 86, of Troy, passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2008, at Koester Pavilion, Troy.

He was born Feb. 19, 1922, in Darke County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence (according to Randall Besecker, he owned either a egg or milk farm in Arcanum area) and Bertha (Williams) Besecker.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred "Millie" (Shawver) Besecker; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Besecker of Greenville and Kent and Cynthia Besecker of Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Ronald Barker of Arcanum and Karen Besecker of Versailles; step daughters, Marilyn Brown of Troy, Cyndi Tooley of Arizona and Linda and Berton Hunt of Indiana; eight grandchildren; five step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; six great-step grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Donovan and Jean Besecker of Laura; sister, Corene Bucholtz of Arcanum; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was a farmer in Darke County for many years and retired from Hobart Brothers, Troy after 20 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army in the 94th infantry during World War II and served in the Battle of the Bulge where he was injured and received the purple heart. He was a 63-year member of the Gettysburg Masonic Lodge and was past master twice. He was a 25-year member of the Scottish Rite, Dayton, and was a 35-year member of the Potsdam Church of the Brethren, where he was head usher for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Potsdam Church of the Brethren, 22 E. Cross St., Potsdam, with Pastor Robert Kurtz officiating. Burial will follow at Gettysburg Cemetery.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Tuesday at the church. Military honors and Masonic services will be held at the graveside.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Koester Pavilion, 3232 N. County Road 25-A, Troy, OH 45373 or Potsdam Church of the Brethren. Envelopes will be available at the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Hale-Sarver Funeral Home, West Milton.
