John was elected to the office of deacon in the Panther Creek Fraternity of German Baptist district, and when Upper Stillwater was set off in 1854 he was part of that congregation and still later in 1865 when Oakland was organized his membership was with this congregation. A little church history may be in order for a clear understanding. Up until 1836 we had no official church name although most refered to us as Dunkers. In this year Annual Meeting decided on the name of Fraternity of German Baptist which continued until 1871, when the name was again changed to German Baptist Brethren. Also, congregational names were changed, Panther Creek eventually became Sugar Grove and Upper Stillwater became Harris Creek.Gale Honeyman

Gertrude Miller, the wife of John C. Miller, died in the Oak Grove Church, Darke Co., Ohio, Sept. 2d. A. D. 1887; Aged 71 years, 10 mos. and 11 days. Sister Miller was a faithful and consistent member, and stood firm in the Old Faith principles and practices as handed down to us by the fathers of the Church. Her seat was promptly filled at the place of worship and her charitable hand was open to help the cause of her Master at all times of need, and during her sickness (dropsy) she called for the brethren to preach to her because she could not go to church; then a little while before her departure, she called for the Elders of the Church and was anointed in the name of the Lord.
John C. Miller and Gertrude Kreider were married May 2d, 1823, and moved to Darke Co., O., in the woods on the 10th day of April, 1834, and raised ten children, six sons and four daughters, all yet alive, and father 80 years old since the 15th of Oct! Sister Miller was a mother of 87 grandchildren; 77 alive, and 20 great grandchildren, 15 alive. A large concourse followed her remains to the Oakland burial grounds, after which the funeral occasion was improved by the brethren from Matthew 24:40.
