From The Valley Register, March 29, 1895
"FATALLY CRUSHED"

"A distressing accident occurred last Tuesday, by which Mr. Luther A. Horine, a well known young farmer of near Jefferson, lost his life.

Mr. Horine left home for Frederick with a three-horse wagon load of hogs, and was accompanied by Martin Sulser, a youth of 15 years, who was in his employ. After unloading the hogs, Mr. Horine started on his return home. It was about noon when he stopped his team in front of the Citizens National Bank, on Patrick Street, and went in to transact some business, leaving young Sulser on the saddle horse. While inside, a team with a braying mule came along and frightened a colt which was one of three animals attached to Mr. Horine's wagon. The horses started to run away, and turning the corner dashed down South Market St.

When Mr. Horine saw his team running away he ran out of the bank and started after it. Near the bridge he seized hold of the end of the wagon, then swung himself around and grabbed hold of the rubber at the side. In crossing the bridge, Mr. Horine was caught between the iron division of the structure and the wagon, and fatally injured internally. The team ran on to the corner at the B. & O. depot, where the slider broke, causing the tongue to drop to the ground. The end of the tongue then ran into the sidewalk and threw the horses in a heap. Young Sulser remained on the saddle horse and succeeding in guiding the runaway team until the horses fell. He was not injured. Just before the runaway team reached the bridge, it struck the huckster wagon of Mr. A. W. Bartgis, of Ellerton, completely demolishing one of the front wheels.

...As soon as it was ascertained Mr. Horne's injuries were of a dangerous character, his wife was telephoned for. She arrived about 15 minutes before he died, but was too late to be recognized by him. He had remained perfectly conscious up to the time of his wife's arrival, but lapsed into unconscious as she reached his side. His death resulted from inward hemorrhages. He was jammed against the bridge division by either the hub of the wheel or the lazy-board, and his injuries were in the stomach. No bones were broken.

....The unfortunate man was 37 years old. The sad affair cast a gloom of deep sorrow over the entire community, and his terribly bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of all. "
