I5 David W. Summers, was born June 24, 1840, and died October 31, 1920. He married Annie M. Roltenhoffer, daughter of Lawrence Roltenhoffer and Chistina. Nine children.

David W. Summers, a prominent farmer of Jackson District, Frederick County, Md., son of George W. and Catherine (Michael) Summers, both deceased, was born on the farm on which he now resides, then owned by his father, June 24, 1840.

David received his education in the public schools of Jackson District, and remained at home until 1875, when his father retired from active farm life, but continued to reside on the homestead, making his home with his son. Mr. Summers then purchased the home place, a fertile farm of 187 acres, situated in Jackson District, eight miles north of Frederick on the Beallsville road. He improved his property, putting up a comfortable brick dwelling, a bank barn, and convenient outbuildings, and by careful cultivation increased the fertility of the soil until the farm ranked among the best in the section. He afterwards added 42 acres making in all 229 acres. Mr. Summers was a progressive man and a very successful farmer. He afterwards purchased the old Horine farm containing 297 acres of excellent land joining his first farm on the north, situated one mile south of Harmony, Md. When he had improved the land, he divided the farm, putting up a second set of buildings, and made of the whole two valuable properties. Mr. Summers is one of the largest owners of real estate in Frederick County. Besides his farms, he owns 165 acres of fine timber land on the Catoctin Mountains, and two desirable building lots in Frederick City. His financial success is due to hard work and close application to his business. Mr. Summers is a Democrat, actively interested in political affairs, and has been a member of the central committee for twenty-five years. He has been a stockholder and a member of the board of directors of the Valley Savings Bank of Middletown from the time of its organization, and was an active worker in building the Frederick and Middletown railroad. In 1890, he was appointed one of the trustees to Montevue Hospital. He was elected president of the board, and served for four years, giving entire satisfaction. Mr. Summers is also one of the trustees of the public school at Harmony. He is one of the most widely known men of the Middletown Valley and is highly respected by his fellow citizens.

David W. Summers was married to Annie M., daughter of Lawrence and Christina Rottenheffer, of Beallsville, Jackson District, Frederick County, Md. Of their nine children, five reached maturity: 1, Minnie C. V., married J. Newton Stottlemyer, a farmer of Washington County, Md.; 2, Calvin D. H., a farmer of Jackson District, Frederick County; 3, John E. M., farmer of Jackson District; 4, Alva C. L., at home; Annie E., (Mrs. Chester Joy), at home. Mr. Summers and his wife are members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Middletown, where Mr. Summers has served as deacon and as an elder for a number of years. He has been one of the trustees of the new Lutheran Church in Harmony ever since it was built in 1880.

J8 Clarence H Summers, died December 24, 1887.

J9 George R. L. Summers, born 1876; died 1992. George R. L. Summers is buried at Middletown Reformed.
