J4 Lewis Ellsworth Mertz, born August 1858 in Myersville, Maryland, died 1942. He married Emma Jane Summers December 20, 1887 in Boonsboro, Maryland; Emma Jane was born 1869, died 1956. Emma Jane's parents were Simon P. Summers and Emmaline L. Zittle.
Lewis Mertz and sons Melvin and Basil came to Montana to homestead in 1911 from North Dakota. Emma Mertz and sons Paul and Albert came later by train with their household belongings and animals being shipped by rail.
