J7 Charles S. Lane, was born October 27, 1848 in Frederick County, Maryland. He married Hettie E. McGill May 1876, daughter of Alexander T. McGill. Charles S. Lane began as a banker in 1872 with Johnston Brothers of Baltimore. In 1874 moved back to Hagerstown, joining Henry S. Eavey, becoming partners with W. W. Hoffman & Co. The new firm was designated as Hoffman, Eavey, and Lane Bankers. In 1903, following the death of his partners, he became senior member. Lane's wife was the daughter of Rev. Alexander T. McGill, D.D., at that time professor of Theology at Princeton. He was a director of Hagerstown Street Railway; Washington County Water; and Washington County Mutual Insurance. He was a democrat, a member of St. John's Episcopal church, and a founding member of the Conocheague Club.

Charles S. Lane was educated at St. Timothy's School, Catonsville, Maryland, and in 1872, graduated from Princeton University.
