Retired Fire Chief Kenneth Lehman
Dies Saturday At Wayne Hospital
Kenneth D. Lehman, 64, 127 Markwith Avenue, Greenville, retired chief of the Greenville Fire Department, died at 7:55 p.m. Saturday in Wayne Hospital after being admitted earlier in the day. He returned to his home on Wednesday from Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, where he was a patient for three weeks. Mr. Lehman was a native and lifelong resident of Darke County, the son of the late Lawrence and Nellie (Miller) Lehman. His wife, Thelma, preceded him in death on January 22, 1948. He was employed by the Greenville Fire Department for 32 years, before retiring on May 1, this year. Mr. Lehman was promoted to captain in March 1948 and was appointed to the position of Greenville Fire Chief on Nov. 2, 1958. When he began his job with the fire department they employed five men and operated two active fire trucks. When he retired 17 men were on the staff with six fire trucks in operation. The largest fire Mr. Lehman helped fight was the Treaty Company Foundry and Warehouse fire. Mr. Lehman was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church; Rotory Club; Masonic Lodge No. 143; Royal Arch Masons, Greenville Chapter No. 77; Elks Lodge No. 1139, all of Greenville; Central Western Fireman's Association and Ohio Fire Chiefs Association. Survivors include two sons, Tom, Los Angeles. Calif., and Jerry, St. Louis, Mo. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Zechar, McKight and Baker Funeral Home, E. Third St. Chapel, with the Rev. John E. McRoberts officiating. Burial will be in Abbottsvillle Cemetery. Friends may call in the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday until time of services.
