H9 Ethel Beatrice Miller, born April 24, 1893, died August 8, 1990; twin sister to H10 Edith Bernice Miller (1893-1896). Ethel married August 18, 1917 Clarence William Cook, born February 2, 1892, died May 10, 1956. Ethel and Clarence had their last home built at 228 Amelia St., Lafayette, Louisiana in 1939 and resided there until their deaths (photograph on right). Ethel and Clarence are buried in Lafayette Memorial Park, Lafayette, Louisiana. Two children.


Welsh Girl Takes Prominent Part in Voice Certificate Recital in Meridian Women's College (Mississippi)

We are in receipt of a program of the Voice Certificate Recital, given on March 1st, in which one of the well known girls of this city, Miss Ethel Miller appeared in three selections, the first "The Maiden's Wish" by Chopin, Mit Einer Primula Veris, by Grieg and Kukuk Wie Alt by Abt. Miss Miller has been attending the Meredian (sic) School for several years, and will complete her vocal work there next year.


COOK - MILLER

Mr. Clarence Cook and Miss Alien (sic) Miller were married last Saturday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller. Rev. J. W. Hervey, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. The wedding was a quiet affair, only the members of the family and the marrying parson being present, and was a complete surprise to the many friends of the young couple.

The newlyweds left Saturday morning on No. 7 for Winfield, La., where they will make their home. Mr. Cook being employed as manager of the Cumberland Telephone Exchange at that place.

The bride, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller, is a charming and accomplished young lady. She has been very popular in the social circles of the community, and as a member of the choir at the Methodist church and active worker in the different societies of the church, she will be greatly missed, although congratulations of all the friends follow the couple on their blissful journey.

Mr. Cook is a very promising young man, extremely pleasant and agreeable. While he was employed with the telephone company here he made many friends, who rejoice with him over his good fortune in securing for himself an excellent wife. The Journal accompanies the hearty congratulations of the many friends with its own best wishes.

Marriage of Popular Couple This Afternoon

Welsh, La., Aug. 18. ---- A very quiet wedding will be solemnized here this afternoon, when Miss Ethel Miller, the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller, will be united in marriage to Mr. Clarence Cook of Winnfield. The ceremony will take place at 3:30 o'clock at the home of the bride's parents, Rev. J. W. Hervey, officiating.

Miss Miller is one of the most popular and accomplished young ladies of the city, and her many friends wish her much happiness. Mr. Cook was a resident of Welsh sometime ago, having been connected with the telephone company. The young couple will make their future home at Winnfield [Louisiana].

Saturday, August 18, 1917, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller, at Welsh, La., Mr. C. W. Cook, of Winnfield, and Miss Ethel Miller were married, the ceremony having been pronounced at 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

Mr. Cook is the efficient and affable manager of the Winnfield branch of the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company, and has many friends here who will join The Winnfield Times in extending congratulations.

Mr. and Mrs. Cook arrived Monday and are at home at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Sowers.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Mrs. Clarence W. Cook, the former Ethel Miller, 97, who died at the residence of her daughter [Mary C. Sherwood Haase] in New Orleans Wednesday afternoon.

The Rev. Ira Robinson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will officiate,

Interment will take place in Lafayette Memorial Park and Mausoleum.

Mrs. Cook was a native of Early, Iowa the daughter of the late Andrew R. Miller and the former Mary Magdeline Yoder, both natives of Ohio. She moved to Welsh, La. at an early age and graduated from the Meridian Woman's College and Conservatory of Music in Meridian, Miss.

She resided in Lafayette for 61 years where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Golden Rule Sunday School Class.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Mary C. Sherwood Hasse of New Orleans; one son, Andrew William Cook of Lake Charles [Louisiana]; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 1 p.m. to service time today and that donations be made to the Golden Rule Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive [Lafayette, Louisiana], is in charge of the arrangements.

C. W. Cook, retired official of the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Co., died suddenly this morning at his residence on Amelia St.

Mr. Cook, 64, came to Lafayette in 1929 where he was plant manager for Southern Bell Telephone. He retired Nov. 11th 1953 after 41 years of service with the company [photograph on right].

Survivors include his wife, the former Ethel Miller of Lafayette, one daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Sherwood, of New Orleans and three grandchildren.

Funeral services were incomplete at press time this morning.

The family has requested funeral service be private and that flowers be omitted.

The Delhomme Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.



Retired Phone Official Expires

LAFAYETTE, La., May 10 [1956] ---
C. W. Cook, 64, retired Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company official, died suddenly at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at his residence here. Death was due to a heart condition.

A veteran employee with Southern Bell, Cook came to Lafayette 27 years ago as a plant manager. He retired three years ago [1953].

Private funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday at the Delhomme funeral home. Graveside services will be conducted in the Lafayette Memorial Park cemetery by Hope Lodge No. 145 F. & A. M. [Free and Accepted Masons]

Surviving is his widow, a daughter, Mrs. Charles Sherwood, New Orleans, and a son, A. W. Cook, Lafayette.


FUNERAL NOTICES

Funeral services for C. W. Cook, retired Southern Bell Telephone Co. plant manager, will be held at a private funeral at 3 p.m. today at the Delhomme Funeral Home.

The funeral home will be open to friends until 2 p.m.

Interment will be in Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Miller, of Lafayette; one daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Sherwood of New Orleans; one son, A. W. Cook of Lafayette; three grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Vivian Hicks of Olla, Mrs. Lillian Kinman of Winnfield and Mrs. M. E. Kidd of Choudrant; three brothers, W. H. Cook of Ruston, Paul and Leonard Cook, both of Monroe, and a number of nieces and nephews.
