Miller, one of the leading members of the Lake County Bar, widely known for his splendid civic spirit and very fine professional attainments, was born at Nappanee, Indiana, on January 3, 1877. William attended the schools of his neighborhood and also taught in that community. He began his collegiate course in the Tri-State College at Angola, Indiana, in 1898, and graduated in 1904, and later took his A. B. degree at the University of Denver in 1906. He taught for eight years in the commercial school at Pueblo, Colorado, two years in Wyoming, and also served as superintendent of schools at Haskins, Ohio, for one year. During his teaching career he attended college during the summer months. On leaving the University of Denver, he entered the University of Wisconsin, where he completed his law course with the degree of L.L.B., in 1910, and also spent one year at the University of Chicago Law School. He established his practice in Gary in 1910, and still maintains the suite of offices he first occupied. His professional life has been entirely in keeping with the finest ethics of his profession and he occupies a singularly respected position among his fellow attorneys and the public in general. He served as president of the Gary Bar Association for two terms and is now serving his third term. Throughout the years of his residence here he has been identified with the major movements of this region. Mr. Miller is a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason, Knight Templarm and a member of the Orak Shrine. He is also a charter member of the Acaia Fraternity at the University of Chicago, a member of the Medinah Athletic Club of Chicago, Commercial Club of Gary, Gary County Club, Y.M.C.A. and is Vice President of the District Bar Association, a member of both the Indiana and the American Bar Associations, President of the Acacia Alumni Association of the Calumet Region, and a director in a number of financial institutions in his city. During the war [WW1] he was a member of the Legal Advisory Board #1 and rendered splendid service in all the local movements and has always been ready to respond to Civic demands that are so frequently being made in this progressive community. At the present time he resides with his family at 720 Johnson Street, Gary, Indiana.
