John Miller (1787-1856)

E6 John Miller, born December 15, 1787, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, died June 11, 1856 in Harrison Township, Elkhart County, Indiana; married ca. 1807 to his first cousin E3 Esther Miller, born May 30, 1787, died April 21, 1861 Elkhart County, Indiana. Esther was the daughter of David Miller and Magdalena Abigail Maugans. They lived in Randolph Township, Montgomery County, Ohio until about 1829, moving north to Newberry Township, Miami County, Ohio and in 1835 to Elkhart County, Indiana.

John was elected to the ministry in the Wolf Creek German Baptist Brethren congregation in Montgomery County. In Miami County his ministry was with the Upper Stillwater congregation. In Indiana, he helped organize Turkey Creek in 1837 or 1838, Rock Run in 1853, and as Elder in charge, Yellow Creek in 1856. They are buried in the Miller (Hoke) Cemetery located on the farm of their son Jacob Y. Miller on the north side of county road 38 between county roads 9 and 11 in Elkhart County. John's marker is engraved with the age at death of 68 years and 6 months which would place his birth as December 11, 1787, however a record of the family written June 17, 1824 gives his birth as December 15, 1787. Esther's name is engraved Ester.
