Mary Mahala Hatheway

Mrs. James A. Hatheway, born Jan 20 1842; died Feb. 11, 1901; age 59 years and 22 days.

Monday afternoon, Feb. 11. about 12:45, the sad intelligence was learned that Mrs. Hatheway had passed to the Great Beyond. Her death came after a long ,severe, and painful illness which lasted nearly fifteen weeks. She bore all this intense suffering patiently.

Mrs. Hatheway's maiden name was Fisher, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Fisher; was born and reared about three miles west of Bowerston. She has two sisters living, Misses Maggie and Caroline Fisher, and to them were born five children -- three boys and two girls, one of whom -- Lottie -- preceded her to the Heavenly Beyond, Apr. 5, 1886. Thus four children share the bereavement of her grief-stricken surviving husband. Mr. and Mrs. Hatheway were converted and became members of the Tunnel Hill U.B. Church in the winter of 1866 under the pastorate of Rev. John LeMasters, which loyal relation they have sustained ever since.

Mrs. Hatheway's last words were: "I am ready to die and be with Lottie."

I am going, going homeward to that land so bright and fair,
Where they say there is no sorrow -- no trace of pain is there.
Husband dear, I now must leave you waiting, not on doubtful shore;
But with perfect faith in Jesus, we will meet to part no more.

Children, listen while I tell you, I with thee here can be no more,
Till we meet so high up yonder, clasp glad hands on heaven's shore!

Now to die am willing, take, dear Jesus, oh do come!
I am suffering so intensely that I long to be at home!

The funeral services were held Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 11:00 a.m., the sermon being preached at the home of the departed by her pastor, Rev. H H. Davis. A large concourse of people were in attendance which speaks even better than any words of respect.
