Death of a Pioneer Died, at his home three fourths mile west of No. 10 tunnel. in Monroe township, Harrison County, Ohio on Friday, June 2, 1893, George Fisher, aged 86 years, 9 months and 1 day. He was born near Cadiz Junction August 31, 1806. In company with his parents (James & Elizabeth Fisher) he moved to the farm known as the Henry Fisher farm in the year 1816. There was but one settler in this section, and he lived on the farm now owned by M.W. Cairns at the east end of No. 10 tunnel. All the rest was a wilderness, unbroken by the plowshare and inhabited by wild animals and Indians, of whom he saw many. Reaching his majority [maturity?] he moved onto the farm now occupied as a residence by his family. On the 12th day of June, 1832, he was married to Miss Margaret Shamell, with whom he lived happily until the 7th day of May, 1890, when she crossed the river to await his coming. To them were born four sons and three daughters. One of the sons died while young, two gave their lives to their country (as members of the 126th OVI) and one James Wilson Fisher is left to pay the last sad rites to his departed parents. The daughters all are living and were present at the funeral. To smooth the path for their aged parents their work is done. Father and mother are at rest. The battle is fought, the victory won. They leave four children, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Two great-grandchildren preceeded them to the beyond. The shadow of sorrow that this death has cast over the entire community is very deep. All who knew Grandfather Fisher knew an honest man, a close observer, a great thinker, a profound reasoner and a friend to everybody. The funeral was largely attended by friends, neighbors, and acquaintances. The services were conducted by Rev. H. Hudson of Bowerston. Interment at Tunnel Hill cemetery. May our Heavenly Father bless this act of His providence to all our good and sustain the bereaved children whose hands kindly lay their father to rest, awaiting the great day when the graves shall give up their dead and there shall be a new heaven and earth wherein shall dwell righteousness H. H.
