Adam and Elizabeth are both buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio, USA. Elizabeth was the daughter of Motiejaus Silinsky and Elzbietos Bicinskuites of Ramygalos, Lithuania. Adam and Elizabeth had Five children.

Adomas (Adam) Preidis was Elizabeth's second husband. Her first husband was Karolis Masiokas, born May 1872 in Village Karsinauka, Panevezys, Lithuania, died April 7, 1909 in New Jersey at age 37. Karolis is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in East Orange, New Jersey. Karolis and Elizabeth also had Five children.

Adam Preidis arrived in the United States at Ellis Island, New York on April 1, 1906. He traveled via the Hamburg-America Steamship Lines on the S.S. America.

Adam (35 years old) and Elizabeth (34) were married on May 9, 1910 at Holy Trinity Lithuanian Roman Catholic Church in Newark, New Jersey.

Elizabeth Madeline Silinsky
1876-1959

I only remember my Grandmother Elizabeth Madeline Silinsky Masiokas Preidis as an elderly woman who had a very hard life. She was born May 9, 1876 in Ramygalos, Lithuania, the daughter of Motiejaus Silinsky and Elzbietos Bucinskuites. She married Karolis (Carl) Masiokas (dob May 1872) in 1896 in Lithuania. Carl arrived in the United States at Ellis Island, New York on April 28, 1906 on the Hamburg-American Steamship Line ship SS Patricia.

Elizabeth and her daughter Paulina (Polly) Christine Masiokas arrived in the United States September 8, 1906 at Ellis Island, New York. Their ship was also of the Hamburg-American Steamship Line, the SS Kaiser Auguste Victoria. She was 7 months pregnant with her fourth child. Twins Valeria and Peter were born in 1902 and died at 5 months and 8 months respectively. They are buried in Panevezys, Lithuania. They traveled 3rd class (steerage) and she was ill the entire trip. People on board helped look after Paulina (Polly). Her son Charles was born October 17, 1906 in Newark, New Jersey. The next child Beatrice was born May 11, 1908, also in Newark, New Jersey.

Elizabeth was widowed April 7, 1909 and married her second husband C2 Adomas (Adam) Preidis May 9, 1910. She had 5 more children. In 1913 the family moved to Columbus, Ohio. They lived on Morrill Avenue, Marion Road, then settled at 236 Barthman Avenue in south Columbus (photo at right). Adam died April 29, 1930. The family was always poor. They had a large garden, kept chickens and geese and took in boarders.

Elizabeth could not read or write and knew very little English. Her children conversed with her in Lithuanian. She never became a United States citizen.

She lovingly tended her garden and a prize gardenia she raised from a gardenia in a corsage. She was blind from glaucoma as long as I knew her. I picture her sitting on her couch in a grayish black flowered dress with her rosary in her hands, praying. There were always cinnamon rolls with icing in her kitchen and portulaca in her garden. She had a terrier named Sandy after the dog in Lil Orphan Annie and a yellow canary named Nicodemus who was quite a singer.

She died January 13, 1959 at age 83. Her funeral Mass was at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church and she is buried at St. Josephs Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
