Death of M. L. Zercher

Marion Loretus Zercher, a well known Topeka business man, son of Jacob and Catherine Zercher, was born in Decatur, Brown County, Ohio, Feb. 3, 1857 . He departed this life at St. Francis Hospital, Topeka, Kan., March 13, 1919, after an illness of one month.

Within recent years Mr. Zercher had given much thought the religious affairs and as a result had become a convert to the Catholic Church. It was his great privilege to receive the consolation of the Last Sacraments and to be surrounded by his wife and children, excepting the two in France, at his deathbed and he in the One True Faith.

His funeral was held from his late home, No. 209 Western avenue on Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock and from the Church of the Holy Name at 9:00 o'clock with a Solemn Requiem Mass, Rev M. G. O'Leary, celebrant; Rev. F. M. Hayden, deacon, and Rev. Patrick McInerney, sub-deacon. Bernard Connor, a student of St. Benedict's College, and Francis Connor of Kansas City, nephews of the deceased, assisted as servers at the altar.

Mr. Zercher was educated in the country schools and at the Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio, and had been an educator in Johnson and Miami counties before coming to Topeka twenty-five years ago. Since that time he has been proprietor of the Zercher Book and Stationery Company at 521 Kansas Avenue,

M. L. Zercher was united in marriage to Miss Mary E. McNulty at Olathe, Kan., Aug. 28, 1884. To this union were born nine children, three of whom, Harry, William and Catherine preceded their father in death. He is survived by his faithful wife and children, Clinton, Theodore, Mrs. James Farrell and Mary of Topeka and Joseph and John with the Expeditionary Forces in France.

Mrs. Zercher was an affable business man, a patriotic citizen, a genial companion socially, but above all a kind husband and indulgent father to his family.

His remains rest in Mount Calvary Cemetery. R. I. P.


M. L. ZERCHER DIES

Well-Known Book Store Man in Topeka for Nineteen Years.

M. L. Zercher died very suddenly yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Francis hospital. Altho he had been ill for a month, and had been at the hospital a week, it was not until Tuesday night that his case was believed at all serious. Mr. Zercher had been suffering from a nervous breakdown.

Mr. Zercher was 62 years old, and had lived in Topeka since 1893, when he came here from Miami county where he was county superintendent of schools. When he first came to Topeka he was manager of the depository of the Educational Publishing Co. In 1900 he established the Zercher Book & Stationery Co., which for nineteen years has been located at 521 Kansas avenue.

Mr. Zercher was born in Decatur, Ohio, February 3, 1857. He was educated at National; Normal university at Lebanon, Ohio, and in 1885 married Miss Mary E. McNulty, of Olathe. From 1881 to 1885 Mr. Zercher was principal of the Gardner school at Olathe. The next three years he was principal of the Louisburg schools. In 1889 he became superintendent of the Miami county schools.

Mr. Zercher is survived by his widow and six children all of Topeka. Mrs. James Ferrill, Mary, Joe, Clinton and Theodore. The Funeral will be held at the Holy Name church at 9 o'clock Saturday morning.
