John Turner Parish was born 10 December 1838, in Fincastle. He was the oldest son of William and Elizabeth Parish. He died 27 September, 1917 at his home in Macon, Ohio (just 4 miles down the road from Fincastle, on Hwy 62). He was from a family of 8 children (the obituary says "nine"), and at the time of his death only his sister, Mary Catherine Parish (Thompson) of Fincastle was still alive. He had never left Fincastle until 1861 when he joined the Union Army in the War of the Rebellion (Civil War). He was in Company D, 24th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for 3 years and re-enlisted until the end of the War, when he was honorably discharged. In the Fall of 1865, he married Sarah Catherine Melvin of Winchester Twp, Adams County, OH. They had 11 children, (five girls, six boys): Effie Alice (born 23 January, 1867, died 23 March, 1885), Lutie Elizabeth (born 25 February, 1869, died 1916), Walter Stuart, (born 10 September, 1870, died 14 July, 1965), Ira Andrew (born 21 April 1872, died 16 January, 1937), William Warren (born 17 October, 1873, died 20 October, 1963), Frederick Turner (born 2 September, 1875, died ?), Melvin Carmi (born 17 January, 1877, died 26 December, 1947), Mary Catherine, known as Katie (born 20 November, 1880, died 14 August, 1902), Susan Edith (born 12 August, 1882, died ?), Sarah Ines, called Sallie, Parish (born 10 June, 1884, died 22 October, 1885) and John Lewis Parish (born 27 December, 1887, died 19 November, 1888). Effie, Lutie, Katie, Sallie and little John preceded him in death. He was grandfather to 21 and great-grandfather to 5. At the time of John Turner's death, Walter, William, Frederic and Carmi lived in Idaho; Ira lived in Churubusco, Indiana; and Susie Parish Wilson lived in Macon, Ohio. At the age of 21 years, he became a member of the Masonic Lodge at Winchester, and at the time of his death was one of the oldest members in years of affiliation, in the state of Ohio. He was "a man of sterling worth and excellent habits", according to his obituary.

Of Sarah Melvin Parish, we know only that she was born 13 October, 1846 and died 10 September, 1919, and in the 1870 Census had her mother, Elizabeth Melvin (age 55, born in Ohio about 1815) living with them in Fincastle. In the 1880 Census, they had Louisa Melvin, an aunt, living with them in Fincastle. She reported being born in Kentucky about 1808, and both of her parents being born in Kentucky. So Sarah had to be a patient, caring person to take care of her own mother AND an aunt in their final days. (In the 1910 Census, their last, Sarah C. was listed as having a father born in Delaware, mother in Ohio). It's interesting to note that Sarah C. Parish died just before women won the right to vote in this country-in all her 72 years, she never was allowed to cast a vote.
